Herman Brix was a champion shot-putter who represented the United Stales at the 1932 Olympics. His good looks ended up landing him a movie contract, where he played “Tarzan.” Later on, he was to change his name to Bruce Bennett and settle into character and supporting roles. However, early in his career he was an action-movie hero and he is human dynamite in this fast-moving comedy-drama about the fight world. He is cast as a kind-hearted lumberjack named Hal Donovan, who is discovered to have the makings of the next heavyweight champion. Under the management of a determined ex-plug and a crafty public relations man, Hal is introduced to the public as “Chopper Donovan, The Man That Everybody Hates!” As Hal uses his golden gloves to beat down one challenger after another, he wins fame and money-but not happiness. Only when he adopts a hungry mutt does his world begin to brighten. Then he meets and falls in love with dancing leacher Kay Conrad. One would imagine Hal’s bliss to be complete, but he slid must overcome a major obstacle, it so happens that Kay’s father is a former leather pusher whose health was ruined in the ring.
