Silent Mr. Sherlock Holmes, The

1085. THE “SILENT” MR. SHERLOCK HOLMES. These early “silent” 2-reelers are a rare treat for Sherlock Holmes fans.
1. THE COPPER BEECHES (1912-USA). A very early and amusingly primitive adaptation of one of the more obscure Holmes stories produced “under the personal supervision of SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE-‘ It tells the story of a wealthy squire who opposes his daughter’s marriage, locks her in a garden shed and hires a governess to impersonate her and lure her fiancŽe to his death. Naturally, the governess turns to Holmes for help. As few titles are used, watch the actors try to tell a complex mystery story in outrageously hammy pantomime.
2. THE MAN WITH THE TWISTED LIP (1922-England) One of a series of over 25 two-reel versions of the Conan Doyle stories starring ELLIE NORWOOD as Holmes. The tale of banker Neville St. Clair who disappears and is believed murdered, until his wife hires Holmes to ferret out the amazing truth. A faithful and rather literary adaptation featuring restrained acting plus a clever storytelling style. Both “musts” for “Baker Street Irregulars.” Silent films with music score, correct projection speed. 68 minutes total. ÒSilentÓ Crime-Mystery-Suspense
