1929. CUBBY THE BEAR: UNBEARABLY ANIMATED! (1933- 1934- USA). BACK IN THE 1930’S, CUBBY THE BEAR, AN ADORABLE CREATURE WITH A ROUND TUMMY AND ENDEARING PERSONALITY, APPEARED AS PART Of AN ANIMATED FILM SERIES KNOWN AS “AESOP’S FABLES.” CUBBY’S CARTOONS ARE IMAGIÂNATIVELY DRAWN AND PLOTTED, AND AT THEIR BEST FEATURE SOME SHARP, SURREAL IMAGERY. THEY REMAIN AS DELIGHTFUL TODAY AS WHEN FIRST SEEN ON MOVIE SCREENS, AND BOAST BETTER THAN USUAL PRINT QUALITY.
1. THE LAST MAIL (1933). LETTER CARRIER CUBBY DELIVERS MAIL TO THE FROZEN NORTH VIA A SQUIRREL- DRIVEN SLED. AFTER LEAVING A SETTLEMENT, HE IS JOINED BY A MOST UNUSUAL – AND WELCOME – STOWÂAWAY, BUT MUST CONTEND WITH A FEROCIOUS, GUN-TOTING FOX.
2. OPENING NIGHT (1933). THE STARS COME OUT AS CUBBY ATTEMPTS TO MAKE HIS WAY INTO NEW YORK’S FAMED ROXY MOVIE PALACE TO ATTEND A GALA PREMIERE. THROUGH A SERIES Of COMICAL MISHAPS, HE FINDS HIMSELF AT CENTER STAGE.
3. CUBBY’S STRATOSPHERIC FLIGHT (1934). CLEVER CUBBY HAS CONCOCTED A NOVEL WAY Of FLYÂING. UNFORTUNATELY, HIS FUN WILL BE SHORT-LIVED, AS AN ANGRY CLOUD DECIDES TO RAIN ON HIS PARADE. BEFORE THE FINALE, CUBBY IS ENTERTAINED BY A GROUP Of SINGING WALRUSES, AND FINDS HIMSELF AT THE CORE Of A GIGANTIC, CAREENING SNOWBALL.
4. LOVE’S LABOR WON (1933). IN THIS MINI-MUSICAL, CUBBY SETS OUT TO MEET AND CHARM HIS BELOVED, BUT A MEAN SPIRITED FOX GELS IN HIS WAY. AS THE SCENARIO UNFOLDS, CHAIRS AND RUGS SING; FISH AND TURTLES DANCE; A DOG IS TRANSFORMED INTO A JUMP ROPE AND AN ACCORDION; AND A SWAN BECOMES A HARP (AND IS PLAYED BY A FROG)!
5. BARKING DOGS (1933) CUBBY’S GAL IS IN TROUBLE. HER MORTGAGE PAYMENT IS OVERDUE, AND MR. WOLF, A SADISTIC FATCAT, HAS COME TO EVICT HER. BEFORE SHE DROWNS IN HER OWN TEARS, YOU CAN BET THAT CUBBY WILL COME TO HER ASSISTANCE.
6. CROON CRAZY (1933). CUBBY HAS HIS OWN RADIO PROGRAM, PRESENTED BY THE MCHANGNAIL CUTICLE COMPANY. NONE Of HIS SCHEDULED GUEST STARS ARRIVE IN TIME FOR THE BROADCAST SO CUBBY SINGLE-HANDEDLY PUTS ON A SHOW, OfFERING DEFT PARODIES Of PAUL WHITEMAN, KATE SMITH, AL JOLSON, MAE WEST AND OTHER FAVORITES.
7. NUT FACTORY (1933). THE FALSE TEETH HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM ALL Of THE RESIDENTS Of AN OLD LADIES’ HOME. AN URGENT CALL IS PLACED TO CUBBY/SHERLOCK HOLMES, WHO INVESTIGATES – AND FINDS HIMSELF IN A BAT-INFESTED HAUNTED HOUSE, CONTENDING WITH A CIGAR-SMOKING SKELETON, DANCING GHOSTS AND, ULTIMATELY, A GANG Of LARCENOUS SQUIRRELS.
8. BUBBLES AND TROUBLES (1933) CUBBY AGAIN VISITS HIS BEST GIRL, WHO HAS BEEN DOING HER LAUNDRY. PLAYFULLY, CUBBY USES HER SUDS TO BLOW BUBBLES, AND FINDS HIMSELF TRANSFORMED INTO A GIGANTIC BUBBLE WHICH FLOATS THROUGH SPACE AND PUTS HIM DIRECTLY IN THE PATH Of SOME CUTTHROAT PIRATES. ;
9. FIDDLIN’ FUN (1934). HERE, CUBBY HAS BEEN TRANSPORTED BACK TO ANCIENT ROME. IN ORDER TO WIN HIS GIRL, HE MUST GO UP AGAINST A GROUP Of ROUGH, TOUGH GLADIATORS WHILE COMPETING IN A DANGEROUS CHARIOT RACE. 61 MINUTES TOTAL. CARTOONS
