2506. LOYOLA, THE SOLDIER SAINT (1951 -Spain). This is an intelligent and informative biography of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits who lived in war-torn 16th century Spain. It was filmed on location at many of the historic sites where this brave and pious man lived. The battle scenes were authentically recreated with the cooperation of the Spanish Army. Loyola spends his boyhood as a page and later becomes a guard in the Spanish court. He is a romantic who suffers from the knowledge that the woman he loves is an unattainable princess. His feats of valor and wisdom earn him the rank of Captain in the Duke’s army. However, a promising military career comes to a halt when a cannonball shatters his leg during his heroic defense of the Citadel Of Pamplona. While recovering, Loyola comes to believe that battles and wars may not be the best ways to set the world on a path of peace. He decides to lay down his sword and sets out to seek new ways of holiness. This well-produced and inspiring religious film carries Loyola through the trials and victories that brought this humble but earnest man to the status of sainthood in the Catholic Church.
