Flaming Classics is a film series that pairs feature films with live work by local performance artists. The series, run by Trae DeLellis and Juan Barquin, is hosted at the Bill Cosford Cinema and hopes to both entertain and educate audiences on classic films that are feminine, queer, camp, and everything in between. The first series of films is Flaming Classics: Summer Camp.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? with JUPITER VELVET and EVAN ALEXANDER on 35mm

Now that Ryan Murphy’s FX series FEUD has concluded, everyone needs to return to the beginning by seeing WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? on the big screen. The inaugural screening of Flaming Classics will feature the Joan Crawford and Bette Davis film that inspired an entire subgenre – known as hagsploitation – after its massive success and has stood the test of time as a great work by two actresses trying to reclaim their careers. Robert Aldrich’s film, about a former child star who torments her paraplegic sister in their decaying Hollywood mansion, was described in 1962 as “a lurid melodrama of hate, revenge and murder, a high-class horror film, in the Hitchcock vein, with virtuoso performances from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, and moments both searing and poignant,” by The Hollywood Reporter.

The screening will be followed by a special live performance by Jupiter Velvet and Evan Alexander.

BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER with JUPITER VELVET

As part of the Summer Camp series, Flaming Classics is celebrating the birthday of Vice President Mike Pence with a commemorative screening of the classic conversion camp comedy BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER. Recently ranked by IndieWire as the best lesbian film of all time, BUT I’M CHEERLEADER is a cornerstone of the American Independent and Queer film scene of the 1990s. Jude Dry, of IndieWire, calls the film “unapologetically queer in all senses of the word,” making it the perfect film to screen for the birthday of Mike Pence, who has been an longtime opponent of LGBTQ rights. The film also features an iconic cast including Natasha Lyonne, Cathy Moriarty, Clea DuVall, Michelle Williams, Melanie Lynskey, and the ultimate drag queen RuPaul!

The screening will be followed by a special live performance by Jupiter Velvet.

GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES with MISS TOTO on 35mm

Flaming Classics: Summer Camp continues as Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell cruise for men and diamonds aboard a ship to Paris. Surrounded by doting admirers, private detectives and a bevy of beautiful bodybuilders, the women reflect on the eternal question: What is love? A classic musical by Howard Hawks, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES is truly a tale about the power of female friendship. The iconic film inspired a multitude of artists, ranging from Madonna (“Material Girl”) to Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) with its gorgeous musical numbers.

SERIAL MOM with QUEEF LATINA on 35mm

Originally intended for a Mother’s Day screening, Flaming Classics is proud to present provoc-auteur John Waters’ perverse take on the ideal image of the suburban mom. A tale of well-meaning murder, Beverly Sutton, played to perfection by a psychotic Kathleen Turner, is willing to do anything to help out her family. Horror and hilarity have rarely been merged so well than in SERIAL MOM, still one of Waters’ best satires.

The screening, presented on 35mm, will be followed by a special live performance by Queef Latina.

FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! with MISS TOTO on 35mm

One of cinema’s greatest cult classics, Flaming Classics is ecstatic to present Russ Meyer’s FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! on 35mm. The film is filled to the brim with fast cars, dangerous curves and killer women. Known as an auteur the sexploitation genre, Russ Meyer’s film is very much a critique of patriarchal power with an undeniable feminist slant. Burn rubber to see FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!

PSYCHO BEACH PARTY with QUEEF LATINA on 35mm

Flaming Classics: Summer Camp ends perfectly with 35mm presentation of the ultimate unknown cult classic PSYCHO BEACH PARTY. A wonderfully bizarre melange of surfer film, psycho-sexual melodrama, and slasher film, PSYCHO BEACH PARTY is unforgettable and intensely quotable. A serial killer is slashing their way through sunny Southern California where a group of surfers try to solve the mystery before becoming the next victim. Starring Emmy Nominee Lauren Ambrose, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Nicholas Brendon, Emmy Nominee Thomas Gibson and five-time Oscar Nominee Amy Adams. Full of camp, double entendres and sexual deviancy, PSYCHO BEACH PARTY is the ultimate way to end the summer.
