The Spanish selection for the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film, BLACK BREAD is set in the war-ravaged Catalan countryside of the early 1940s where a local man is accused of murder and his son sets out to find the truth. Reminiscent of PAN’S LABYRINTH and adored by audiences and critics alike, BLACK BREAD won an unprecedented number of prizes, including 9 Goya Awards and 13 Gaudí Awards.
Guest Scholar Linda C. Ehrlich will introduce the film. Following the screening, there will be a roundtable discussion with Dr. Ehrlich and distinguished UM Faculty Yvonne Gavela, Miguel Angel Balsa Marin, and Elena Grau Lleveria.
Linda C. Ehrlich–writer, teacher, editor–has published extensively about world cinema and about traditional theatre. Her taped commentary on THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE appears on the CRITERION COLLECTION DVD of this film. Dr. Ehrlich has taught as an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee/Knoxville, Case Western Reserve University, and on the Semester-at-Sea program (University of Pittsburgh/University of Virginia).
